Phuket Gibbon

The Phuket Gibbon Rehabilitation Project is one of those Phuket attractions which every tourist should see during their stay on the island. The Phuket Gibbon Rehabilitation Project is located at Bang Pae waterfall which is located somewhat east of Thalang. There are plenty of signs which you can follow to this location however if you are driving by yourself then you should definitely get a good map of Phuket Island.

There are many Gibbons in Thailand who still live in the wild. This has also been the case in Phuket and unfortunately some people caught these lovely monkeys and used them in places like Patong to get money from tourists. Travelers could take a picture with a Phuket Gibbon and even though this might sound innocent, it definitely is not. Many of these Phuket monkeys were drugged and this is definitely a bad form of animal cruelty. So next time you are in Phuket or Pattaya and are sitting in a bar or on the beach then please do not give money to these people who use the gibbons for their own profit.

Another problem with people having young Phuket gibbon monkeys is that they are relatively easy to handle when they are a young age and they are still considered to be cute. However this quickly changes when these monkeys get older and they can actually become very aggressive and dangerous. These monkeys that you see at the Phuket Gibbon Rehabilitation Project have rather long and very strong teeth! So when these monkeys get older and are not of use very much to their handlers, many of these gibbons are killed or left somewhere to fend for themselves.

The Phuket Gibbon Rehabilitation Project was founded years ago and is currently run by a group of international volunteers who have created a lovely Gibbon rehabilitation project at Bang Pae waterfall. This non-profit organization tries to find gibbons on Phuket who are being abused and are not living in the wild. By taking them to the Phuket Gibbon Rehabilitation Project, these monkeys are put through a long process and rehabilitation which should lead to these monkeys being able to be released back into the wild in a safe location.

There are very informative and interesting tours which visitors can attend free of charge and these tours are run by the group of international volunteers. Please note that the Phuket Gibbon Rehabilitation Project is completely run on donations so please do leave a small donation if you can spare to do so.

Another good reason why the Phuket guide recommends travelers to visit the Phuket Gibbon Rehabilitation Project is that you can actually also enjoy the lovely Phuket waterfall which located right next to the Phuket Gibbon Rehabilitation Project. Opening hours of the Gibbon Rehabilitation Project in Phuket are daily from 10:00 until 16:00.
