Koh Lanta Location
Koh Lanta is part of a group of fifty two islands which are located of the coast of Krabi. Koh Lanta Yai Island is located approximately seventy kilometers from Krabi and can be reached by ferry from Phuket, Trang and Krabi. Please note that Koh Lanta is a very seasonal travel destination and that many hotels and restaurants on Koh Lanta are only open during certain times in the year. The same applies with ferry and boat services to Koh Lanta.
If you are staying on Phuket for example then there is no direct ferry service to Koh Lanta. You would first need to take a ferry to Phi Phi islands and then switch ferry to the one which would take you to Koh Lanta. This ferry service is only available during the tourist high season which is from November until April each year.
If you are traveling from Krabi then you would need to head over to the Khlong Chilat pier where you can take a ferry twice a day to Koh Lanta but please note that this ferry service only runs from November until March. The cost of a one way ticket will cost around 200 Thai Baht and the trip takes around two hours. If you would like to visit Koh Lanta during the low season then you can of course always hire a private boat such as a long tail boat for the trip however it can be pricey and take a lot longer than two hours.
Koh Lanta Beaches
Some of the most beautiful beaches in this part of Thailand can in fact be found on Koh Lanta. The Phuket guide has listed the most beautiful and most popular Koh Lanta beaches for you. What makes spending time on Koh Lanta beaches so great is the fact that there are relatively few tourists on Koh Lanta. This will allow you to stay in peace on the beach and the Koh Lanta beaches do not get crowded. The west coast of Koh Lanta for example is one long uninterrupted beach and there are many great spots where you can stop off and enjoy the beach and the sea.
Kan Tiang Beach
This is one of the more secluded Koh Lanta beaches as it is located far away from the main Koh Lanta pier and the main town of Koh Lanta. If you are looking for a virgin and unspoiled Koh Lanta beach then you should definitely spend the day at Kan Tiang Beach. There are no Koh Lanta hotels or resorts located at Kan Tiang beach nor are there any real stores or restaurants. If you are looking for plenty of activities then this Koh Lanta beach is probably not the right beach for you.
Phra Ae Beach
One of the most popular Koh Lanta beaches is Phra Ae beach. This lovely Koh Lanta beach is also known as Long beach as it is a rather long and stretchy sandy beach. This tropical Koh Lanta beach is great for those travelers that enjoy swimming in the sea or enjoy snorkeling as the water is relatively calm with few to no waves or real tides. If you have not booked any Koh Lanta hotel or resort yet then you could consider staying at one of the hotels or resorts located along this beautiful Koh Lanta beach.
Klong Dao Beach
The most famous beach in Koh Lanta is most definitely the Klong Dao beach. What makes this Koh Lanta beach so well known are its spectacular sunsets. People from all over Thailand travel to this Koh Lanta beach for its amazing sunsets. Klong Dao beach is approximately three kilometers in length and is generally considered to be the most popular Koh Lanta beach. You will however be surprised when you visit Klong Dao beach as it is definitely not over developed. You will find however an assortment of restaurants, shops and lovely Koh Lanta resorts.
Koh Lanta Activities
There are plenty of Koh Lanta activities to keep the tourists entertained. Although Koh Lanta is not Phuket, there are enough varied activities to keep any travelers happy.
Some of the most popular Koh Lanta activities include snorkeling and diving. There are plenty of Koh Lanta dive schools where tourists can book dive trips or even certification courses. Koh Lanta is known as one of the premier dive destinations in South East Asia.
Another very popular Koh Lanta activity is caving. Koh Lanta is blessed with many caves and caverns due to the geological composition of Koh Lanta which consists mostly of lime stone. There are guided tours in these amazing caves and will cost you around two hundred Thai Baht.
